Subject: Current KTY Enrolments Term 2 2020
Date: March 18th 2020

Dear KTY Parent,

Like you, we are torn between the two paths available to Australia as a nation, a society and a community: Do we lock everything down and try to immediately stop the spread of this awful virus to minimise fatalities - and then wait for a vaccine or cure before we reopen our borders; or do we try to allow a controlled spread through the population to develop immunity without overloading our hospital system to minimise the fatalities with a known end goal of business as usual.

We are seeing the conflicting advice coming from the frontline medical staff whose rational path is to minimise fatalities full stop; and the opposite path coming from the medical bureaucracy trying to get Australia to a point where we can live normal lives again as quickly and safely as possible. Both positions are rational and both positions seem achievable.

As a business, we have no choice but to follow the advice and directives of the medical bureaucracy and the chief medical officer whether we agree with it or not.

As such, we have made the difficult decision to continue to stay open to support our staff, our teachers and the children who are coming to class.

We are under no illusion that the situation could change really quickly and with little notice and as already indicated, we have contingency plans in place to manage this situation.

From Term 2, assuming we are no longer able to offer face to face tuition (whether by government directive or community choice), we will move to an online delivery model. Over the past few days we have begun to make concrete decisions as to how this delivery will take place; and although this is subject to change and adjustment, at this stage, if forced to, we propose to deliver classes as follows:

  • During the regular class time, students will join a "Zoom" online group video chat where everyone in the class can see (and interact with) each other student in the class as well as the teacher. Depending on enrolments, this may be during all regular class times or a streamlined and minimised timetable of classes offered once a week and recorded for later use. These classes may be slightly shortened compared to regular class times depending on student attention span; and probably will include time for everyone to have a chat together to maintain important social ties at the end of class.
  • Depending on class sizes and teacher availability, each student in the class will have a regular scheduled opportunity for a 10 minute one on one consultation with their teacher in order to give corrections and address any concerns the student may have.
  • The teacher may send out a video of a short exercise or mini dance routine to all students a couple of days before the class and then enhance their performance of it as part of the class.
  • The students will have a chance to practice the exercise prior to the class in their own time (dare we say somewhat like TikTok)
  • We will also be posting relevant dance videos and resources in the groups for students to explore when they're bored.
  • The classes will be recorded and will be able to be watched again at a later date by enrolled students.

Speaking frankly, we need help from our community. We need your help in enrolling and paying for Term 2 so that we can continue to pay our teachers; and more importantly so that we can ensure that The Space continues to operate and is still here when all of this is over!

Which is why we are sending invoices out tomorrow. We need to know how many students are in a financial position to continue paying fees for Term 2.

While we hope that all students are able to join us for Term 2, we understand that some people's financial position will be seriously compromised. If you are in this position, please contact us to arrange a way for your child to continue dancing. Having said that, we really really need those who can afford to pay for classes to continue to do so to allow us to pay the teachers, our staff and continue operating.

We will be sending invoices out tomorrow and look forward to a speedy response from everyone where possible. Let's try to create some certainty out of all this mayhem :)

We look forward to seeing you in class or online soon!

In the meantime, we wish you and your loved ones a safe and healthy journey through these troubled and uncertain times.

love,

Deb, Ariel and The KTY Team
